on my way
----
the following are fragments shared leading up to the release of on my way in 2023...
‘'omw' is a 40 page artist book, every page an artwork with works layered from 2018-2023. Drawing from the
'extreme self', I've been trying to present an "'''extreme image'''". I've been creating a density through traversing back and forth my own lil archive....but also, I'm just inspired by mezzo piano, drinking starbucks, buying lots of stickers and wishing I was a YouTuber (but I don't want to hear my voice aloud).
'omw' takes the physical form of a novel (small and pocket sized)... with the intention for u to scribble in, easily carry around rather and to maybe write notes in? Although most novels will have a story, this one doesn't display one traditionally and the content is similar to an artist book, an archive or a transportable exhibition stored inside ur bag.
Though I love traditional artist books with hard covers, I didn't want the future of these books to be put on display but rather interacted with when ur on the way.
The last year l've recycled lots of elements of previous made work as l've tried to explore situatedness (sorri i don't even think that's a work but let's pretend it is) and recontextualising. But also, it's a way to sustain my practice with my own basis for new works. This recycling process has created really dense images; what I feel when I doom scroll, when I'm listening to emergency intercom while also on pinterest... the layering creates a digital nausea. I've layered so many different elements; drawings, snippets from pdf publications l've made, stickers, found imagery (memes and cute photos), photo's I've taken on my phone or 35mm.
Also, the paper of the book is made from recycled paper lol.
while I made this book I was
tossing and turning whether I would self publish or try to find a publishing house. l've always gotten so overwhelmed at advertising/marketing, admin, coming up with interesting ways to campaign and sell work while staying true to what I want to communicate... Ronen convinced me to go with self publishing and we talked about creating one's own authentic community which really hit close to home. also being able to take full control over the creative direction and making sure the book comes out how I wanted with no negotiations. Ive also taken off august to work on personal projects which has kind of just turned into getting this book out there.
Anyways that's how I got to self publishing!
the overall flow of 'omw'
traverses between chaos with moments that are a lot simpler. I feel like the content of this book is quite visually dense and stimulating, which hopefully results in slowly being consumed, picked up and put down or just flicking open a random page over a cup of tea and really taking the layers. If u do decide to take in the book in one go Ive sporadically added more fluid pieces with watercolour or chunky prose with oil pastel to make it less overwhelming.’
